Chronic Pain Relief Journey: Emily's Saphenous Nerve Injury to Recovery

For the past four years, I’ve dealt with chronic pain in my leg after injuring the saphenous nerve in my lower leg. The pain radiated across my knee and down the inner side of my shin, from my knee to my ankle. Before the injury, I was an active person, working part-time as a yoga teacher and personal trainer. I loved long walks with my dog, hiking with my family, cross-country skiing, cycling with my husband, and downhill skiing. Although I could still do these activities, the constant burning in my leg took all the joy out of them.

I consulted several doctors and ended up with a pain specialist who proposed different treatments, but sadly, none provided long-lasting relief. It took me years to finally decide to see Dr. Williams, as I live in Seattle and he is based in Baltimore. The thought of traveling across the country for medical care seemed daunting.

From the moment I met Dr. Williams, I was completely overwhelmed by the attention, care, and time he devoted to me during my first visit. He crafted a treatment plan tailored to my situation, and a month later, I flew to Baltimore for surgery.

After my first surgery, Dr. Williams stayed in close contact, always responding promptly and with genuine compassion. However, after six months, we realized my recovery wasn’t progressing as hoped. I returned to Baltimore for a second surgery.

I’m now four months post-second surgery and starting to see real improvement. I recently returned from a trip where I was able to hike six to eight miles a day for several days and even enjoyed a long bike ride. I’m rediscovering the joy of my favorite activities without the constant presence of chronic pain.

I’ve never experienced the level of care that I received from Dr. Williams. He truly listened to me and helped me get back to the life I love, with less and less pain each day.
